TWO PATHWAYS

from foundations to creative storytelling

EIGHT LESSONS

building language step by step

Two paths through Stage 1

Stage 1 Foundations is divided into two progressive learning journeys. Each brings together lessons, interactive activities, games and creative challenges as learners build confidence with English.

Path Two — A Few Steps Further

Lessons 5 - 8 | Mushroom & Feather

Language develops through reading, listening and storytelling as learners begin to explore meaning, connect ideas and use English more creatively.

Path One — First Steps

Lessons 1 - 4 | Acorn & Bridge Plank

Learners build the foundations of English through grammar, vocabulary, listening, sentence building and everyday communication.

Explore the Stage 1 Pathways

This short film explains how the Stage 1 Foundations pathways are designed and how learners journey through them.

Follow the Acorn, Bridge Plank, Mushroom and Feather Paths and discover how the pathways connect, how learners progress through Stage 1, and how the Forest Games and interactive challenges form part of the journey.

What’s Inside the Lessons?

Take a closer look inside Stage 1 Foundations and discover how learning develops from the building blocks of English in Lesson 1 to reading, exploring and creating stories in Lesson 8.

See how grammar, listening, interactive activities, downloadable resources and storytelling work together — where grammar grows into stories.

Explore our Forest Activities 🌳

Step inside the forest and discover interactive games and challenges along the Acorn, Bridge Plank, Mushroom and Feather Paths. Each activity builds on the English explored in the lessons, bringing grammar, reading and listening to life through stories, games and discovery.

Interactive Activity Boards

Bring each lesson to life through interactive learning.

Every lesson in Stage 1 Foundations is supported by an interactive activity board, designed to give learners a space to practise, explore and use the English they are learning.

Across the boards, learners can move words and ideas, build sentences, sort vocabulary, respond to listening and reading activities, solve language challenges and develop their own creative responses.

As learners progress through Stage 1, the activities grow with them — moving from early grammar and sentence building towards comprehension, storytelling and creative language use.

From guided practice to creative independence

The boards are designed as part of the wider learning journey rather than as stand-alone exercises. Activities connect directly with the lessons, Listen & Learn resources, Forest Games and stories, allowing learners to revisit language in different ways and gradually build confidence.

By Lesson 8, learners are bringing together the skills developed throughout Stage 1 — listening, reading, grammar, vocabulary and comprehension — before using those skills to begin creating stories of their own.

It is a living woodland waiting to be explored.
